Meditating Algorithm: Immersive in the life and the works of Paul Chiang

Using a series of works by artist Paul Chiang, this exhibition brings together several Taiwanese new media art teams and music creators. It features key works from the 1960s to today, presented as a 21-minute immersive digital experience in ten chapters. The "RE" in the title means both Respect and Respond: a new creation that carries on the artist's creative life.

The chapters Silver Lake and Notes are not about making the paintings move. Instead, they reinterpret Paul Chiang's work from a digital perspective, inviting viewers to step inside the paintings rather than simply look at them.

Silver Lake

Paul Chiang created the Silver Lake series during a turbulent period of his life, when he traveled back and forth between Taiwan and the United States. A large reservoir near his home in the U.S. became a mirror of his state of mind. The textures and light in the paintings are traces that life has left behind. Seen from another angle, they also look like cosmic events bursting out of empty space.

This chapter uses Gaussian Splatting to turn the paintings into 3D scenes. The technique is usually used to recreate real-world environments. As it builds an image, it layers fine marks like brushstrokes, echoing the textures of the paintings. Silver Lake expands from a flat surface into space and time. A still image becomes a process that unfolds step by step, and the scratches and pressures of life take on new forms and meanings.

Notes

Music runs through all of Paul Chiang's work. This chapter draws on four paintings inspired by classical music: Songs Without Words, Debussy – Keyboard, On Wings of Song, and Jinzun / Transfigured Night. Built around music visualization, it blends these four works, each with its own subject and style, into a single experience.

The composition, brushwork, color, weight, and tone of each painting relate to a sensory experience, such as speed, sound, or scale. The visuals are closely tied to the rhythm, tone, and melody of the music. Broken down and rebuilt digitally, the paintings are rewoven in space into something more open and more physical.
