In a circular economy, manufacturing no longer moves toward a linear endpoint. Materials continue to flow, transform, and regenerate. We call this imagined state “Supermatter”: matter without a fixed form or boundary.

Across the sphere, light flows, refracts, and reflects, at times forming images of glaciers, oceans, and forests. Here, reflection is both optical and introspective. It invites us to reconsider the relationship between industrial progress and the natural world.

The installation unfolds in two modes.

In the permanent display mode, the system draws on curated environmental datasets provided by UMC. Through a generative program, the data takes shape as shifting combinations of material, color, and movement. Rather than remaining as fixed figures, it becomes a visual form that continually unfolds.

In guided mode, image and sound move together through technological networks, urban life, and natural landscapes. The sphere becomes the narrator, leading visitors through these environments from its shifting perspective and gradually unfolding UMC’s vision for a sustainable future.

The same sphere is at once a generative artwork, a data visualization system, and a medium for audiovisual storytelling. Rather than presenting sustainability as a fixed outcome, it frames it as an evolving relationship to be observed and reconsidered.

The same generative logic extends beyond the installation to form the Generative Identity of UMC’s Circular Economy & Recycling Innovation Center. Built on a coherent algorithmic framework and visual grammar, the system produces visual assets for use across different forms of brand communication.

Environmental data is no longer confined to numbers on a dashboard. It becomes a visual language that can be seen, felt, and continually transformed, allowing the center’s vision of sustainability to remain coherent while evolving across different media and contexts.

The guided mode unfolds across four movements. It begins amid technological networks and urban life, enters nature to observe and listen, passes through the refraction of thought and an inward dialogue, and arrives finally at “Everlasting,” where humanity and nature thrive together.

When progress is no longer understood only as forward motion, looking back at the world we have passed through becomes part of how we move ahead. Unfolding Reflection holds space for precisely this turn. Across its shifting surface, data takes visible form, technology learns to respond to nature, and a shared future gradually comes into view.
